The Costa del Sol has come to be known as the Costa del Golf in recent
years. The traditional things that have benefited the typical tourist
over the last four decades have also to some extent caused an increase
in the amount of people that come to Costa del Sol to play golf. The
climate and the long hours of sunshine provide a perfect opportunity
in which to practise the sport and each year the clubs and courses
are visited by an ever-increasing number of enthusiasts and professionals.
The long hours of sunshine that the Costa del Sol receives has established
the region as firm favourite amongst golf's fans.
Golf
enthusiastic will be able to find a complete variety of courses
ranging from the technical and demanding, with challenging lakes
and bunkers to the straightforward, with wide easy fairways.
Miraflores
Opened in 1990 and designed by the late Folco
Nardi, this course is situated between Marbella and Mijas. It offers
its players an enjoyable course full of interesting challenges.
Alhaurin El Grande La Cala
Situated in the municipality of Alhaurín
El Grande, behind the mountains of Mijas, Alhaurín Golf is
one of the newest courses on the Costa del Sol. Based on a design
by Severiano Ballesteros, the course is known for its brilliant
greenness between the mountains and the dense vegetation of the
surroundings. The course is characterised by its ups and downs as
the fairways rise and fall adapting to the quirks of the landscape.
La Cala
With the opening of the third golf course,
La Cala resort becomes one of the largest and most exclusive in
the south of Europe. Cabell B Robinson has designed three challenging
courses that take into consideration the special contours of the
land. The rigorous maintenance of the two existing courses, La Cala
South (par 72) and La Cala North (par 73), allow golf to continue
all through the year.
